Course Description

60 Minute Lecture

Although critical healing work happens in the clinical setting, children live with their families, not with their clinicians. Yet families are not part of the clinical experience in many/most mental health/NF clinics. Resilience-building — an optimal outcome of good treatment — can be enhanced dramatically when appropriate family members are carefully integrated into a child’s healing experience.

Using NF to help a child feel safe with a parent, coaching a parent to recognize and support a child’s healing in the moment, and supporting the child-parent unit overall is not only worthwhile, it is for many children, (and parents) life-changing. The NF setting can be ideal for this transformation!

Course Objectives

  • Objective 1

Identify and explain 1 assessment tool to measure efficacy of including an appropriate family member in NF sessions

  • Objective 2

List and describe at least 2 therapeutic methods by which a safe and appropriate parent or family member can be integrated into child NF treatment

  • Objective 3

Explain how NF can best be integrated into an overall mental health treatment for children in a clinic setting
